Va. Beach to buy land for light rail

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - The referendum to extend the Tide into Virginia Beach isn’t until November, but city council members voted to buy three pieces of property Tuesday night.

One of the light rail stations will sit on the property, which was purchased for $300,000. The city looks to be saving about $100,000 after an assessment of the property showed it was worth about $400,000.

Some are questioning the move, since city leaders decided to wait for voters to decide if they should pursue extending the line from Norfolk.

In September 2010, the city paid Norfolk Southern $40 million to buy the right of way tracks, and that was before light rail was even running in the mermaid city.
