Bond revoked for teacher in spanking

New charges are expected

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - A former Virginia Beach high school teacher accused in the sexual battery of one of his students will face new charges, according to court officials.

Police arrested Michael Shanklin, 37, and charged him with abduction and sexual battery of a minor after a student claimed Shanklin spanked her inside a Landstown High School classroom on Jan. 18.

Shanklin was tried on the sexual battery charge, found guilty and sentenced to 12 months in jail. He then appealed that conviction and was awarded a new trial.

According to Macie Pridgen with the Virginia Beach Commonwealth Attorney's Office, a forensic evaluation of Shanklin's computer revealed videos and images that will result in additional criminal charges. The nature of those images was not disclosed.

Shanklin was granted bond at an earlier time, and he was to live with his father. Pridgen said Shanklin violated the conditions of his bond by renting a car and driving to a hotel in Newport News after learning new charges would be filed against him. There, Pridgen said Shanklin had a "psychiatric episode."

Because of the evaluation on his computer, prosecutors say Shanklin is a danger to the community and asked the judge to revoke Shanklin's bond. The judge agreed, Pridgen said.

He was transported to Peninsula Regional Jail.
