Boaters take advantage of safety course

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Boaters in Virginia Beach took part in a free boating safety course Saturday.
At the course, boaters learned about safe boating practices, navigation signs and making sure everyone stays safe on Virginia waterways.
Organizers say only two percent of registered boaters in the state have taken a safety course. They add the time to take the course is now, because pretty soon it will be required by law.
“A lot of the people that own boats still have not been trained, so there are a lot of people out there that need this training in the next few years, and this is a free course,” Jerry Clemmer, Volunteer Boating Safety Instructor told WAVY.com. “You can go to the VDGIF website online . There are free courses taught all over the state of Virginia.”
By 2016, everyone on board a personal watercraft will be required to have a safety education course completion card.
This includes jet skis, wave runners and all motorboats with a 10 horsepower or greater motor.
