VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Probationary teachers in Virginia Beach were told this week that their contracts might not be renewed next year.
Virginia Beach Schools spokeswoman Eileen Cox said extreme budget restraints prompted the letters. Cox added similar letters were sent to teachers both last year and the year before.
First, second and third year teachers are considered probationary.
Cox explained the school system hopes retirements and relocations will make the layoffs unnecessary.
Teachers will be told by mid-April if their contract as renewed.
Cox did not know how many teachers were affected.
