Beach man wins $1 million in lottery

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) -
A Virginia Beach diesel mechanic won $1 million on a lottery ticket this week.
Winner Ricky Hayes says he held onto the ticket for three days before he told anyone.
"I just stared at the ticket for 20 or 30 minutes at a time," he said. "It's getting more real now."
Hayes won the top prize in the Virginia Lottery's $1,000,000 Cash Blast game. Winners have the option of receiving the million over 25 years or in a one-time cash option of $628,000 before taxes. Hayes chose the cash.
Hayes purchased the winning ticket at the 7-Eleven at 5664 Indian River Road in Virginia Beach. The diesel mechanic stopped there on his way to work.
The store received a $10,000 bonus from the Virginia Lottery for selling the winning ticket.
Hayes is the fifth player to claim the top prize, according to a Virginia Lottery news release. Three other million-dollar winners have not been claimed yet.
