Hundreds of VB teachers face layoffs

Superintendent speaks out

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Probationary teachers in Virginia Beach were told this week that their contracts might not be renewed next year. 640 teachers will receive letters with this unsettling news.

The school system says it needs to cover a $40 million budget deficit.

The possible layoffs have far-reaching effects across Virginia Beach as classrooms will likely have to increase in size and programs could be cut.

Virginia Beach Schools spokeswoman Eileen Cox said similar letters were sent to teachers both last year and the year before, but School Superintendent Dr. James Merrill told WAVY.com this year it is not a formality.

"I'm not at all as confident this year that everyone will be able to come back," Merrill said.

First, second and third year teachers are considered probationary.

"It is a raw deal that folks beginning their careers need to experience this," Merrill added.

Teachers who retire and increases to classroom size may soften the blow, but Merrill said some teachers will not make it. He would not speculate how many, but said he understands if some start looking for jobs elsewhere.

As Charles Babbin's only daughter, Ashley, prepares to graduate high school, he is worried major layoffs could threaten the quality of education in Virginia Beach. "There's cuts that can be made probably anywhere, but school shouldn't be one of them," Babbin said.

Merrill will present the budget to the school board on Feb. 7.

Teachers will be told by mid-April if their contract is renewed.
