MACHIPONGO, Va. (WAVY) - Route 13 Southbound in Machipongo has reopened after an accident involving a tractor trailer and a box truck.

Virginia State Police Sgt. Michelle Anaya said the accident was reported around 4 a.m. and 41,000 pounds of frozen pork spilled onto the roadway.

The tractor trailer, driven by David Wade, of Hampton, was traveling northbound on Route 13 when it came around a corner, jackknifed, and went across the median.

Anaya said an empty box truck was heading southbound at the time and swerved to avoid hitting the tractor trailer head-on.

In doing so, the box truck hit the trailer part of the vehicle, which caused the contents of the truck to spill onto the roadway.

Wade was charged with failure to maintain lane of travel.

The driver of the box truck received non-life threatening injuries.
