Teen killed by stray bullet at party

SURRY COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) - Autopsy results released Monday show a teenager killed at a Surry County graduation party was shot in the back.

Investigators say it was a stray bullet that hit 18-year-old TyQuan Johnson. He was not the intended target of the gunfire.

Two other people shot at the party survived.

The Surry County Sheriff's Office says the call came in just before midnight at home on Alliance Road.

There is no one in custody for the shooting.

"He was my baby," said Johnson's mother Katina White.

Johnson had just graduated from Sussex Central High School on Friday. He was the starting quarterback for the football team.

"Everybody loved him," White added. "He never bothered anybody. He's never been in any trouble."

Family says Johnson had just accepted a full ride to play at North Carolina Wesleyan. Sunday brought heartbreak for the family. White says the pain started with a phone call.

"My first call came and said he was shot," White said.

Johnson was at the party on Alliance Road in Surry County. Jerome King's stepdaughter hosted the get together.

"I don't know what happened," King added. "I really don't know."

King says his yard and near by street were filled with teenagers. The celebration turned violent when a fight broke out.

"All I heard is shots," King said. "That was it. Probably about 10 or 11 shots. That was it."

The Surry County Sheriff's Office says two groups were firing at each other. Three people hit including Johnson were hit. We're told he wasn't a part of the fight. He was struck by a stray bullet. The other two victims suffered non-life threatening injuries.

"I feel sorry that stuff even happened," King added. "It should have never happened. It shouldn't have even happened."

"That was my baby," White said. "He was innocent."

White rushed to the scene and was able to see her son one last time.

"The last thing he said was, 'Mom, I love you. I'm going to be okay,'" White added. "They put him on Nightingale and when he got to the hospital he had died."

Surry County deputies are still looking for the people involved in the shooting. They ask for anyone with information to give them a call.
