Summer cooling centers

HAMPTON ROADS, Va. ( WAVY) - Temperatures are soaring in Hampton Roads, and it's shaping up to be a hot summer. If you are looking for ways to beat the heat when you're out and about, the following cities are offering cooling centers.

Chesapeake
There are no official cooling centers, but city officials say people are welcome to visit libraries and community centers. Library hours are as follows:

Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Sunday 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.
Monday – Thursday 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Friday 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Hampton
Residents can visit public libraries or community centers.

Newport News
Residents who need a break from the heat can visit recreation centers, senior centers, or libraries. They can also take advantage of Huntington Beach,or city pools at Doris Miller Community Center and Magruder (hours are noon to 7 p.m.; Doris Miller is closed Mondays and Magruder is closed on Tuesdays).

Norfolk
Libraries are open across the city to provide relief from the heat. All libraries are open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, and the Pretlow location is open Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Two splash pads are free and open at Shoop Park and Norview Community Center .

Virginia Beach
City officials encourage residents to visit any of the nine libraries, six recreation centers and two malls.
