SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - A Suffolk couple found dead in their home Tuesday afternoon is still being listed as an undetermined death. However, a police incident report released Wednesday listed the woman as a victim of murder/nonnegligent manslaughter.
Police found 47-year-old Kathryn Laine and 50-year-old Stephen Laine dead inside their home after responding to a call for an injured person.
"We had gone to the store and returned and just saw the fire engines and the emergency vehicles," neighbor Gloria Watkins said.
Watkins and her husband, Clayton, worried about their neighborhood friends, so they started asking questions.
"Another neighbor told us that there had been a possible murder-suicide," Watkins said.
Investigators say the teen boy, who lives in the home next door to the Watkins, found his mother, Kathryn, on the floor when he got home. He called 911 around 3:30 Tuesday afternoon saying his mother was hurt and needed help.
When police arrived, they found Kathryn dead in the house. Police say the nearby garage was filled with carbon monoxide and the body of the boy's father, Stephen, was on the ground.
"I'm surprised. Totally surprised," Clayton Watkins said.
Clayton told WAVY.com the Laines lived next door for nearly 15 years. The Watkins watched the family's son and young daughter grow up.
"I feel bad for the children. I could tell that they really loved their parents because they did things with them. I felt very badly for their kids," Gloria added.
The Watkins can't figure out what could lead to this tragedy.
"I had actually gone to school with Kathy, the wife, and she was a very hard working person in the nursing field. He was in the business field," Gloria said. "I know at one point he had changed jobs or lost jobs, but he was currently working."
Kathy Laine was an R.N. and lactation consultant at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center. The hospital said she loved working with newborns and new moms.
"She was an outstanding nurse and a compassionate team member for more than 18 years. Our thoughts and prayers will be with her family during this most difficult time," Wynn Dixon, president and CEO of Chesapeake Regional Medical Center said.
Friends say the Laines just put their Christmas decorations out.
Tuesday night, the lights gave an out of place, cheery glow to a house now filled with tragedy.
"I don't know what to say right now. It's kind of just sinking in," Clayton continued.
The Nansemond-Suffolk Academy released the following statement, "The NSA community is deeply saddened by the news of the sudden passing of members of our NSA family, Stephen and Kathy Laine." NSA said counselors will be available on campus for the rest of the week to support students and faculty members as needed.
Police have not released the official cause of death, as autopsies will be performed Wednesday. Meanwhile, police say the children will stay with friends or family.
