SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Nearly a dozen people were displaced after a two-alarm fire ripped through their homes early Wednesday morning.

Diana Klink with the City of Suffolk said the fire sparked around 5 a.m. in the 300 block of Holladay Street in downtown Suffolk. Crews arrived on scene in just five minutes and began a fire attack. They were able to get the fire under control in an hour.

Kashawn Brown said she was awakened by a knock at the door by a neighbor.

"The man was hollering get up the house on fire. I heard stuff started popping. I had to run upstairs to wake everybody up cause everybody else was asleep," Brown said.

Two adjoining two-story duplexes were affected by the fire, Klink said. As a result, 11 adults were displaced and are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

No one was injured in the fire. Klink said an occupant was woken up by a smoke detector on the second floor of a duplex.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation at this time.
