SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - 10 On Your Side put school security to the test in Suffolk.
"Safety is our main priority," said Creekside Elementary School Principal Katrina Rountree.
Still she admits, the school is working to correct a security loophole.
"It's a work in progress," said Rountree.
Since December, some 2nd and 3rd grade classes have worked in trailers outside the school. 10 On Your Side witnessed how it works. A custodian met the class outside, then let them in through a side locked door. Teachers will eventually have swipe cards.
Parents are concerned that sometimes students are sent in pairs without an adult.
"It's not the perfect situation and not the perfect answer and we're open to suggestions," said Principal Rountree.
The school is partially surrounded by a fence, which Rountree admits is not the best defense.
"They could access the property by coming around or even going over the fence," she said.
"The ideal situation is to have someone here, whether staff, whether it's volunteers to walk out to get the students," Rountree added.
In the meantime, school officials are making the best of the resources they have.
Rountree is particularly proud of the process in place for parents picking up their children. Parents are required to sign in and sign their child out.
