SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - A tragic head-on crash involving a van and a school bus shut down Route 58 in Suffolk for nearly seven hours Wednesday.
The van's driver, identified as 55-year-old Fredrick Michael Adkins of Suffolk, was killed in the crash.
According to police, the crash was reported Wednesday at 9:07 a.m. on Route 58 westbound and Route 10 (Godwin Boulevard).
No children were on the Suffolk Public Schools bus at the time, and the driver of the school bus was treated at the scene by Suffolk Fire and Rescue.
Initial reports were that the van traveling eastbound, crossed over the median and hit the bus head-on in the westbound lane, wedging the van under the bus.
Crews closed both lanes in the east and westbound directions of Route 58 until almost 4 p.m.
The accident remains under investigation.
