SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - A Suffolk man has been charged with animal cruelty after police say he shot a pit bull Monday.

Police were called to the 6100 block of Brookwood Dr. for reports of a person with a gun in the area.

When officers arrived the dog's owner told them that Keenan Moody, 18, shot his pit bull.

Moody was arrested and charged with animal cruelty, shooting in a public place, and reckless handling of a firearm, according to a city spokeswoman.

"He's not a harmful dog, he doesn't harm anybody," owner Duana Owens said. "[When] anybody comes over, he jumps on them just to play with them, everybody knows that about him, he's not a vicious dog."

The dog survived the shooting and was taken to an emergency vet where it was treated for shoulder and leg injuries.
