Family of victim says truck was not his

SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Brenda Young heard news of her brothers death on television.  She saw pictures from the Suffolk Plaza parking lot, and knew right away. It was him.

"We loved him. He loved people," said Brenda Young. "He just loved everybody."

Police are investigating the case as a suspicious death after they found Steven Lamar Young, 53, of Chesapeake wrapped in an unknown material in the bed of the truck. The white Chevrolet S10 pick up was found in the shopping center on North Main Street.

Young showed WAVY.com a picture of her brother. It was taken in the front yard of her Portsmouth home years ago. Young says he looked the same right up until the day he died.

"Just an easy going person, very friendly, always with a big little snaggletooth smile," said Young. "That just was him, period."

The last time Brenda spoke to her brother was Thursday. She says he was staying with a male friend in Chesapeake. But when the family couldn't reach him by phone for days, they started to worry. By the weekend, they began a search, one that ended when they turned on the television Wednesday morning.

"I was just in shock, in total shock," said Young.

Police covered the pick up truck with a blue tarp. When they removed it, Brenda saw the white Chevrolet.

"It wasn't his truck," said Young. "It belonged to the friend, the guy that he stayed with, and he was just visiting somebody."

An autopsy did not reveal the cause of death. Police are waiting on lab results. Brenda says her brother had a serious heart condition and diabetes. She, too, is waiting for answers.

"We are just doing the best we can to keep up our spirits," said Young.

Police say Steven Young stayed at a Chesapeake home on Shadow Lake Drive. No one at the home wanted to speak on camera, but two people in the driveway told WAVY.com they were friends of Steven's, and they were in mourning.

Police will not say how long the truck was parked at the shopping center. But, employees tell 10 On Your Side they saw it there Friday night.
