WAYNESBORO, Va. (WAVY) - One of the cubs rescued from a tree after its mother was killed has died.

Rehabilitators at the Wildlife Center of Virginia in Waynesboro found the male cub dead in its enclosure on October 20.

The second bear cub will be closely monitored over the next few days.

The mother of the cubs was hit by a car Monday morning on Route 58 in Suffolk.

Officers discovered the two bear cubs, both male, stranded in a tree. The cubs were tranquilized to aid authorities in getting them down from the tree. The surviving cub fell 40 feet from the tree during the rescue.

Both cubs were taken to Wildlife Center on October 18 for examinations by a team of wildlife veterinarians.

A necropsy will be preformed to determine the cub's cause of death.
