Body found in Suffolk truck identified

SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Police have identified the body that was found wrapped in an unknown material and left in the bed of a pickup truck Wednesday morning.

The Medical Examiner's Office says the victim is Steven Lamar Young, 53, of  the 300 block of Shadow Lake Drive in Chesapeake. A cause of death has not been released.

The truck containing the body was located in the 900 block of North Main Street, which is located in the Suffolk Plaza shopping center. The truck was parked in the back of the shopping center parking lot.

"It's an eerie feeling to see something like that happen here," said Dennie Ellis, a shopper who stopped to take pictures.

Police say an employee reported the body at 8:15 a.m.. Suffolk police draped a blue tarp over the white Chevrolet S10 pick up. Police covered the license plates before the truck was towed.

Ellis spoke to the maintenance man who originally called police. Ellis says the man told him the body was wrapped so well that he couldn't tell if the victim was a man or a woman.

"He said it had been here a couple days and the windows were halfway down," said Ellis. "He didn't say anything about the body or anything. He just said it was wrapped up."

Employees who work in the shopping center say they noticed the truck parked in the same spot Friday night, but are not sure if it has remained there since.

"I'm sure I saw it Friday. I'm pretty sure," said Daniel Davis, who works at Sal's Pizzeria in Suffolk Plaza. "If I didn't, then there was another car that looked exactly like it."

A nearby pawn shop has surveillance footage of the area, but would not show it to WAVY.com. A worker says detectives have a copy of the video.
