Suffolk man gets $2,600 water bill

SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Suffolk's Randy Smith admits he uses a lot of water, but he told 10 On Your Side he has never used $2,500 worth.

Smith was sent a water bill from Suffolk Utilities totaling just under $2,500 - before taxes.

"Who could afford a $2,500 water bill for two months? I almost had a heart attack," Smith said.

He admits he had a toilet that ran water for a while.

"I turned it off because it was running and then I fixed it and they said, 'That's your problem right there, let me cut your bill in half,'" Smith said.

The bill was then reduced to $1,200 which still hurt Smith financially.

"It would cut into our extracurricular activities," Smith said. "We would really have to work hard to pay off a bill like that. "If I have a swimming pool or sprinklers that I ran all the time, that's one thing, but I don't."

WAVY.com spoke with a spokesperson with the city, who said they are still investigating to see whether or not there was a mistake made with Smith's bill.
