PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - The likelihood of a tornado in the area is low, but wind speeds could peak at more than 50 mph after 2 a.m. Friday morning.
Meteorologist Don Slater said tornado watches issued in the far west WAVY viewing area (including Franklin and western Southampton County) should not amount to tornado warnings.
However, wind speeds between 35 and 45 mph will reach the area between midnight and 2 a.m. Friday, and could even reach 50 mph in some parts of southeast Virginia.
Those winds will move offshore at approximately 3 a.m. and will be followed by more wind, averaging between 15 and 20 mph. Winds will drop down by 7 a.m. and will be followed by sprinkles throughout the area.
