SPCA takes in puppies after tornadoes

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - The Norfolk SPCA took in 21 puppies from animal shelters in Bertie and Hertford Counties after the dogs lost their homes in last week's tornadoes.

The shelters in those counties were overwhelmed caring for animals that were injured or separated from their owners.

Samuel Richards and his wife came specifically to adopt one of the tornado puppies.

"So much to love, and she needs a good home," said Richards who adopted the first puppy.

Jackie Lowie has room in her heart for one of the puppies as well.

"My dog passed away in October and I'm looking to save a puppy," Lowie said.

Sarah Harrison came to look at the animals and made an immediate connection with one.

"She just gravitated right towards me and me towards her, so it looks like a good fit to me," said Harrison. She started the adoption process right away.

The shelter requires that the household members, including pets, come in to interact with the adopted animal before they are approved.

"Puppies are wonderful and if you can add an animal to your family, don't forget that we have lots of other dogs and cats here at the shelter, all looking for great homes," said Michele Williams with the Norfolk SPCA.

Five puppies were adopted in the first half hour after opening, plus one of the shelter's adult dogs.

By late afternoon, 13 of the tornado puppies had adoptions pending or completed.
