WINDSOR, Va. (WAVY) - A contractor’s forgetfulness is being blamed for what was thought to be a suspicious package in the Windsor area Tuesday.

According to Sgt. Michelle Anaya with the Virginia State Police, a U.S. postal carrier heard a ringing sound coming from inside a mailbox in the 13000 block of Old Suffolk Road. The Post Master then called the Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies enlisted the assistance of the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigations to handle the incident.

Further investigation revealed the mailbox contained a working smoke detector that was forgotten by a contractor. Anaya said the contractor forgot to put the smoke detector back inside a home and instead put the detector in the mailbox.

The contractor then failed to let the owner know the smoke detector was inside.
