SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - A man armed with a shotgun was shot by police Friday afternoon, when they responded to a fight in progress call on Central Avenue in Suffolk, according to Debbie George, Suffolk police public information officer.
According to police, they arrived on scene and observed a "large disturbance." They then heard a gun shot and saw a man standing on the porch of a residence with a shotgun.
Police say they asked the armed man to put his gun down, and he began to. But then he raised the gun back up, and officers fired at him, striking him once in the arm.
Officers said they had to force entry into the residence to get the 49-year-old man to medical attention, and he was then transported to Sentara Norfolk Hospital by the Nightingale helicopter.
Police say he was in surgery this evening but his current condition is unknown.
No police officers were injured in the incident, but the two officers involved were placed on administrative leave.
The suspect's name has not been released because no charges have been filed.
