RICHMOND, Va. (WAVY) - If you are planning a trip to the DMV expect longer lines. A statewide computer problem is preventing the agency from issuing new ID cards. A damaged storage system in the Virginia Information Technologies Agency is to blame. The DMV is one of two dozen state services that have not been available since Wednesday.
If your license expired between August 25 and August 28 officials say once the system is restored you will need to bring a birth certificate, passport or other document that shows you are a U.S. citizen and legally permitted to be in the country.
It's not clear when the system will be up again.
VITA says crews are expected to work non-stop until the problem's fixed.
If you need to get a driver's license or ID card, visit the DMV website at www.dmvNOW.com or call (804) 497-7100.
