Safety at local schools increased

HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) - School administrators across Hampton Roads took extra precautions Monday to make sure students were safe.

"I think they do feel a little safer," said grandparent Janea Hamilton. "I thin it's a good thing although Ghent is very sage. My son and daughter went here, and now my granddaughter goes here."

Across the region on Monday, sheriff's deputies were posted in elementary schools in Virginia Beach while in other localities there was an increased police presence in and around schools.

Already in Hampton Roads, police are posted at middle and high schools as school resource officers. Parents are relieved about the extra precautions given the carnage at a Connecticut elementary school last Friday.

"I thought the whole thing was absolutely disgusting and heartbreaking," Ashley, the mother of a young child said. "My heart goes out to those families. It makes you very, very paranoid about your own children. I'm glad they're doing everything they are to make our children safe."

WAVY.com was unable to find out when the increased security measures would end.
