VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - The runner who died in Sunday's Dodge Rock 'n' Roll 1/2 Marathon has been identified.

Virginia Beach Police spokesman Adam Bernstein said 27-year-old Sean McCarthy, of Richmond, became sick after crossing the finish line. Medics treated the man at the scene before taking him to Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital.

Doctors at the hospital pronounced him dead a short time later.

Police say McCarthy had no known medical problems and a cause of death has not yet been determined.

"We regretfully confirm that a participant passed away after Sunday's half marathon," event organizer Tracy Sundlun said in a written statement. "We are greatly saddened by this terrible tragedy. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to the runner's family and loved ones, and we ask everyone to keep them in your thoughts and prayers."

The death marks the second time in 2 years a competitor in the race died. Last year, a 23-year-old Chesapeake man died while running.
