SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) - Troopers are investigating a fatal crash involving a tractor trailer and a state vehicle Friday afternoon in Southampton County.
Sgt. Michelle Anaya with the Virginia State Police said the crash occurred around 11 a.m. along westbound Route 58 at Route 58 in Southampton County near Armory Drive.
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) had shut down the right lane of Route 58 for road repair at the time of the crash, Anaya said. There were signs and arrow boards in the work zone.
"A tractor trailer struck a [VDOT] crash truck in the rear, ran off the road and struck several trees," Anaya said in a press release. The driver of the tractor trailer, identified as 63-year-old Ormand Telford of Castalia, NC, died at the scene.
Sgt. Anaya said Telford was not wearing a seat belt.
All lanes of Route 58 were fully re-opened just before 8 p.m. Friday.
