PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WAVY) - State Police in Rhode Island arrested a prospective member of the Virginia Beach Hells Angels motorcycle club Saturday afternoon for illegal drug possession.

Capt. Michael Winguist with the Rhode Island State Police said troopers had the Hells Angels' club house in Providence, R.I. under surveillance for the charter's 20th anniversary party. The Virginia Beach charter "prospect" and four other our full members, called "patch" members,  were headed to the party.

Rhode Island troopers noticed their car approaching the the club house just before 1 p.m. Troopers saw the driver make several lane changes without signaling and noticed several passengers not wearing seat belts.

Troopers stopped the car and asked if anyone had weapons. After several of the members said they had knives, troopers got the driver out of the car and began a body search.

During the search, they found an unlabeled pill bottle containing amphetamines and a small amount of cocaine on the driver, troopers say. Winguist identified him as Douglas L. Crain, 40, of Virginia Beach. Crain was arraigned on two counts of possession of a controlled substance. Bail was set at $1000, which he posted. Authorities released him from custody pending his appearance at future court dates.

Troopers filed no charges against the four patch members, including the Virginia Beach charter president. The knives they carried complied with Rhode Island state law.

Winguist said the Providence party was attended by more than 100 Hells Angels members and prospects from numerous chapters throughout the United States. Some of the out of state chapter members in attendance had traveled to Rhode Island from as far away as Alaska, Hawaii, California, Arizona, South Carolina, North Carolina, New York and Ohio.
