VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Friends remembered this weekend last year. They celebrated Christopher Cummings' 20th birthday.
His 21st was supposed to be bigger and better.
The Old Dominion University student was shot and killed in his off-campus apartment in the early hours of June 10.
"It was just creepy," said Corey Ferguson, Cummings' fraternity brother. "There were memorials outside his house. It was like a daily reminder."
Ferguson attended Cummings' 21st birthday party at Shaka's in Virginia Beach. The party was a fundraiser organized by the Remember Christopher Foundation and the Student Hip-Hop Organization at ODU.
Proceeds from the event will go to a scholarship fund in Cummings' name.
"We all felt like we had to do something about it," said an ODU student, who DJ'ed the event. "We felt obliged to help out fellow students."
Congressman Bobby Scott and ODU President John Broderick will deliver remarks at Sunday's fundraiser and vigil at the ODU Webb Center.
Representative Scott first introduced the "Campus Safety Act" after Cummings was found shot to death inside his off-campus home back in June.
