VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - The last week of summer is here and for now, the red flags at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront are still flying.
Swimmers were in the water Monday. The red flags are there as a precaution, according to lifeguard spokesperson Tom Gill.
It's summer's last gasp and plenty of people are at the Oceanfront trying to make the last week before the unofficial end of summer last a little bit longer.
"I think it's sad," said tourist Jessica Martin. "Summer should be extended."
Businesses, including hotels, are looking to cash in and tourists are looking for another couple great days of weather.
"I have never been to Virginia Beach," said tourist Bobbie Funkhouser. "I can't believe how nice it is."
Many beachgoers discovered dangerous rip currents when they arrived, courtesy of Hurricane Danielle. That forced lifeguards to all but close the water over the weekend.
"The current was really strong and the waves were really big," said Sophia Tailor.
Sunday there was only a handful of rescues. Compare that to the 117 swimmers rescued Saturday.
