JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) - The Peninsula Health District is searching for anyone who had contact with a rabid raccoon in James City County Sunday.
Lois Gary with the Peninsula Health District said individuals found the raccoon alive on Forge Road and took it to the James City Fire Station 1 in Toano. The raccoon later died and tested positive for rabies.
The Peninsula Health District is asking for those individuals to contact any Health Department at 757-603-4277 about their contact. Exposures can also include direct contact between a pet and the rabid animal.
Rabies is deadly but preventable. Make sure pets are vaccinated and report all exposures to bits and scratches to a doctor and the local health department.
