PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - A woman was hospitalized Sunday after fire tore through her home on Sequoia Road in Portsmouth.
Firefighters responded to the 300 block of Sequoia Road around 1:30 p.m. after a passerby saw a house on fire. Crews arrived on the scene to find a single-story home in flames.
A woman who lives at the house was able to escape the blaze on her own but was taken to a local hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation, according to a fire department spokesman.
Fire crews worked quickly and were able to bring the fire under control in about 20 minutes.
The fire caused extensive damage inside the home and has been deemed uninhabitable, according to a spokesman.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
