Portsmouth library catches fire

Fire started in book drop, incendiary in nature

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) -  

Portsmouth firefighters battled a fire at the main branch library on Court St. in Portsmouth Saturday evening.

 

Crews responded to a fire call in the the 600 block of Court St. at around 6:00 p.m. Saturday. When they arrived. they called in the incident as a working fire.

According to fire department spokesman Cpt. Paul Hoyle, the bulk of the fire was put out within the first ten minutes after crews arrived. The fire was declared under control at around 6:50 p.m.

Cpt. Hoyle tells WAVY.com that investigators have determined that the fire started in the book drop and is incendiary in nature.

There were no injuries reported and no one was in the building at the time of the fire.
