PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - Portsmouth police are investigating a  police-involved shooting that took place off Twin Pines Road Sunday morning.

Officers were called to the 4900 block of Twin Pines Road in Portsmouth around 9:45 a.m. after a married couple reported that a man was in their home with a knife and had injured both of them.

Officers arrived and confronted the suspect and at some point shot him.

The suspect was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital where he underwent surgery. Police have not released his condition.

The married couple were taken to Maryview Hospital for treatment of cuts they received during the confrontation with the suspect.

A criminal investigation and an investigation by the Professional Standards Unit have been launched as is standard procedure in all police-involved shootings, according to a police spokeswoman.

Residents in the area were shocked to hear about what happened.

"I'm really concerned now,"  parent Laurie Wolfe said " I wouldn't even think anything like this would be going on in this neighborhood as many times as I've been through here. It's kind of spooky."

"It's very disturbing," resident Lilburn Hurdle said. "My stomach is hurting me right now as we speak. It's crazy."
