PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - A driver of a police car was injured after his vehicle crashed into a Portsmouth home Tuesday afternoon.
According to Jan Westerbeck with the Portsmouth Police Department, the crash occurred at the intersection of Jefferson Street and Effingham Street around 4:30 p.m.
Westerbeck says the driver was hurt, but did not say how badly.
Witnesses on the scene tell WAVY.com the officer was driving on Effingham Street away from the interstate while a car was coming out of Jefferson Street. They say the officer swerved to get out of the way of the car and then crashed into the home.
They also say one of the drivers was going too fast, and that the officer looked like he was limping when he got out of his vehicle after the accident.
Additionally, they say an elderly woman who passed away years ago had lived there, and the home has been unoccupied since.
