PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - Police say a pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle Monday evening died at a hospital.
According to Janice Clark with the City of Portsmouth, officers were called to the intersection of Airline Boulevard and Rodman Avenue at 8:24 p.m.
Clark says the victim, 52-year-old Harold Lewis Shepherd of Portsmouth, was taken to the hospital where he died shortly after arrival.
"He was walking up to 7-Eleven to get a cup of coffee," Shepherd's sister Donna told WAVY.com. "He told my mom he was going for a walk, he'd be home in about an hour and on his way walking home he got hit by the car crossing the highway."
Donna Shepherd says she and her brother shared a March 13 birth date, that Harold Shepherd was a single father with three kids and that he will be sorely missed by his family.
A preliminary investigation indicates Shepherd was crossing Airline Boulevard when he was struck by a Nissan Cube. The driver of the Nissan, an 83-year-old woman, was driving westbound on Airline Boulevard.
Investigators have not charged the driver at this time.
