PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - A SWAT team responding to a possible barricade situation found an adult male dead by the back door of the home.

Police said the man, identified as 58-year-old Willard Schuyler Greene of River Cove in Portsmouth, died of a self inflicted gun shot wound.

A deputy sheriff heard shots fired inside the home when he went to serve civil papers Tuesday afternoon.

According to Portsmouth Police, the deputy went to #4 River Cove at around 3 p.m. when he heard the shots. He backed out of the area and called for assistance, according to police spokeswoman Jan Westerbeck.

The SWAT team entered the home at 5:30 p.m. and found the man dead from a gun shot wound. Westerbeck said police did not fire any shots.
