PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - Some Portsmouth community leaders are rallying around embattled Mayor James Holley.

The handful of church, civic and city leaders are urging voters to vote 'no' on July 13 for a recall election. Holley faces the recall after a judge certified more than 9-thousand signatures from citizens asking him to step down.

During a news conference Tuesday, Holley said a change would hurt the city.

"We would think it would be in our best interest that we completed it with the commission that's already in place, the present council that's focused on Portsmouth's future."

Organizers plan a rally for Holley Wednesday at noon at New Bethel Baptist Church on Greenwood Drive.
