PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - The renovated Children's Museum of Virginia in downtown Portsmouth is planning for a late spring opening.

Familiar favorites will return along with newer interactive exhibits for curious children and their parents.

"It had been a fair number of years and most interactive exhibits need to be updated within three to five years," said Director of Museums Nancy Perry.

New exhibits include a Farmer Food Mart where children play at buying groceries and a working seaport complete with a crane and kid-sized tugboat.

Favorite returning exhibits include the Lancaster train collection and the Bubbles play area with all new bubble tables.

The old museum closed in September of 2009. The new museum will have a decidedly Portsmouth flavor.

"We have really made a cityscape this time, playing on the buildings that are in Portsmouth. The interior one of the shops looks like the coffee shop on High Street. We've added a pet shop, a library," said Perry.

The price for the renovated museum comes in at about $13 million.
