PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - A parade of horses stretched eight miles through Portsmouth Saturday morning in honor of black history month. The Buffalo Riders paraded though Portsmouth to celebrate the history and memory of the Buffalo Soldiers.
The African American unit served in the 9th and 10th Cavalries of the United States Army from the 1800s until the Vietnam War. The Buffalo Riders tell WAVY.com they have a very special reason for keeping the memory of the Buffalo Soldiers alive.
"We just want to let the children know what their history was and what their history is all about so that they can pass that information on to their children and their grandchildren," says Ken Wright of the Buffalo Riders.
Two surviving Buffalo Soldiers were on hand to help kick off the parade.
