PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - Fire officials are warning Portsmouth residents of a man allegedly identifying himself as a firefighter and trying to make entry into their homes while claiming to be performing home inspections.
Fire officials say the suspect, described as a man of European or Asian descent does not present any city identification and does not wear a uniform.
"Can't really speak for what his intentions are but they're probably not good," said Portsmouth Fire Captain Paul Hoyle.
A resident in the Highland Biltmore neighborhood reported the incident Monday, according to fire spokesman Capt. Paul Hoyle. Investigators do not have a good description of the suspect.
To ensure residents' safety, fire officials want you to be aware that if a firefighter were to do business in your neighborhood, he/she would be in uniform and would have the appropriate city credentials. Officials say fire investigators, however, will not always be in uniform, but are required to have their law enforcement badges and city identification in plain view.
"If you have anyone that comes to your house and says they're representing the fire department then you should see both of these a uniform and city ID," said Hoyle. "If you don't, there should be warning signs going off."
Further, officials say home safety surveys are only conducted and scheduled at the request of the resident.
If you're approached by someone claiming to be a firefighter and you're not sure, officials urge you to call 911 immediately and do NOT let them into your home. Emergency operators can and will verify the presence and identity of any legitimate fire department employee.
If you have any information that could help police find the suspect in this case, please call the Portsmouth Fire Marshall's office at 393-8689.
