NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Investigators say the suspect in a hit and run case in Newport News left behind a key clue at the scene: his license plate.

Police used the plate, which was embedded in the vehicle that was hit, to find 22-year-old Justin William Thacker.

Officers were called to a traffic accident on Galahad Drive on Friday March 12 around 11 p.m. Police spokesperson Lou Thurston said both of the damaged vehicles were still at the scene, but the driver who caused the crash had left. The license plate left behind led officers to Thacker's home on Great Park Drive, where he was arrested and charged.

Thacker faces two counts of leaving the scene of an accident, a second DUI offense, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a level I or II controlled substance charges.
