NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - A Newport News high school student is in jail, accused of bringing a gun to school.

Police spokesperson Lou Thurston told WAVY.com a concerned parent called Denbigh High School's principal at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, to report that a student was at school with a gun.

A school security officer and the school's resource officer removed the student from class and took him to a secured location where officers say they discovered a Jimenez Arms .380 caliber handgun in his pocket. Thurston said the gun was not loaded, but the student had several rounds of ammunition in a clip.

The student, 19-year-old Wayne Raynod King, was charged with one count each of having a concealed weapon and having a firearm on school property. He's being held without bond.

King told officers he had the gun for protection, police said.
