SUSSEX COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) - Sussex deputy Carlos Turner, 37, was responding to an accident Wednesday morning involving two tractor trailers when he lost control of his vehicle and hit another vehicle head-on.
According to Virginia State Police Sgt. Michelle Anaya, police were called to an accident at 6:47 a.m. involving two tractor trailers on I-95 southbound at mile marker 33.
One tractor trailer overturned causing an entrapment and the other was upright in the median, Anaya said.
During this time, Turner was responding to the accident when he lost control of his 2010 For Crown Victoria, ran off the road, over corrected and hit a 2007 Suzuzi Forenza head on. Anaya says the driver of the Suzuki is 31-year-old Jason Davis of Jarratt, Va.
Med-Flight responded to the scene, and the Virginia State Police Reconstruction Team was called to assist troopers at the deputy's accident. Both Davis and Turner were airlifted to the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond with serious injuries.
Trooper C. J. Gassner and the Virginia State Police Reconstruction Team are investigating the incident.
Trooper A. H. Wyatt responded to the jackknifed tractor trailer accident on I-95 and determined that the truck, driven by David W. Jefferies, swerved to avoid another vehicle, causing him to run off the road. Jeffries has been charged with reckless driving.
