NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Local police officers offered a presence Friday afternoon at schools, hours after dozens were injured and killed at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut.

According to Chris Amos with the Norfolk Police Department, officers were placed outside of every Norfolk school Friday afternoon.

Amos said the department wanted to ensure a police had a presence outside of all schools, and police did not consult with school officials because the officers were not inside of schools.

Amos says he is not sure how long the officers' presence will last.
