Police: Man beaten in violent abduction

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) - Police in Newport News are investigating a Thursday morning abduction and robbery. Police say a 63-year-old man reported that he was jumped from behind by a man with a knife and forced into his vehicle in the 1200 block of 79th Street.

Police say the victim was punched several times and taken to a Hampton motel room where he was then tied to a chair and ordered to give up his ATM pin number. The victim complied and was left alone in the room where he was able to free himself and call police, police said.

The suspect is apparently using the victim's ATM card, and police are now chasing down the surveillance video with hopes we will be able to show you the man who is using the card. "We have numerous leads to follow.  The ATM card is leaving a paper and video trail, and detectives are going to different locations in Newport News and Hampton.  We are trying to get video of this guy using the card," says Detective L. LeGrande of the Newport News Police Department.

The victim told a neighbor he thinks he was targeted because the suspect was laying in wait knowing he had to go to work at 4:30 in the morning at the shipyard, and his car had been broken into recently.

The suspect has been described as a tall black male, between 6 foot 1 to 6 foot 3 inches tall, wearing a red or burgundy shirt with a yellow image in the center.

An investigation is ongoing. If you have any information that could help police in this case, call Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
