NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - A single-engine plane crashed into a hangar at the Newport News-Williamsburg International Airport Saturday afternoon.
National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Keith Holloway said the pilot, the plane's only occupant, was not injured, however, the plane sustained substantial damage. Holloway said the NTSB did not dispatch investigators to the scene.
Airport spokeswoman Jessica Wharton said the pilot of the Piper Arrow crashed into one of the three hangars owned by Rick Aviation. She had no other information about the accident.
A Newport News police spokesman said a call from the airport came in at 3:15 p.m. for firefighters to assist with mutual aid on a small plane that struck a hangar.
A spokesperson for Rick Aviation identified the pilot as John Bombaro. WAVY.com attempted to reach Bombaro and left a message, but he has yet to return the call.
