NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - In airports across the country, including Hampton Roads, air passengers are noticing a stepped up screening process. The TSA's Secure Flight Program took effect Monday.

The program makes sure passengers have ID cards and answer questions about their full name, date of birth, and gender.

The airlines require that information before issuing a boarding pass.

Passengers will also notice enhanced pat-downs at security.

Air passengers at Norfolk International Airport said they're grateful for the security at airports, especially since the recent mail bombs that were intercepted.

"They're catching it before it becomes a problem, but we need to be very vigilant. And it slows us down getting through airports, but that's worth the price of safety," said passenger Clay Dockery.

Another passenger, however, said it wasn't enough. "I think it still needs a little more improvement, so I don't mind being here a couple of hours early to go through the security. It's fine with me, and the safety of my daughter," said Margaret Weil.

Norfolk International Airport expects to install the advanced imaging technology after the first of the year to conduct enhanced pat-down procedures.
