PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - A man was medevaced from his 23-foot pleasure boat near Swan Quarter, N.C . after it ran aground on the Pungo River.

The 48-year-old man's family contacted Coast Guard watchstanders in North Carolina around 1:45 a.m. Saturday after he did not return as expected at 10 p.m. Friday.

Coast Guard Sector North Carolina dispatched a MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter and a 25-foot response boat to search for the missing boater while a sheriff's deputy from Beaufort County N.C. gathered more information from the man's family.

The Coast Guard helicopter located the overdue boat, which had run aground, over four hours later. The Coast Guard crew medevaced the 48-year-old, who was suffering from a laceration and a leg injury, according to a press release from the Coast Guard.

The man was taken to Vidant Beaufort Hospital in Washington, N.C.

"The family was able to relay the man's approximate location to the Coast Guard," said Chief Petty Officer Delain Tate, the operations unit controller at Sector North Carolina. "This allowed us to narrow our search area and locate the man in a timely manner."
