JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) - One person was killed in a fatal wrong way car accident on Route 199 at the I-64 overpass in James City County, according to Michelle Cotten with Virginia State Police.
Cotten says Robert Wade Brooks, 43, was hit head-on by George Richard Lawson, 80, who was driving westbound in the eastbound lane of Rt. 199. Brooks died at the hospital.
Cotten says Lawson was driving a 2000 Mercedes-Benz the wrong way when he collided with Brooks, who was driving a 1999 Ford Escort. The accident happened around 4:17 p.m.
Brooks lived in Gloucester and Lawson lives in Williamsburg.
Both drivers were taken to the hospital, where Brooks later died. Lawson was charged with reckless driving.
VDOT says the ramps from Rt. 199 and I-64 are now open.
