VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) - The widow of a Norfolk police officer found shot to death in Virginia Beach last October is waiting to find out if she will receive state and federal benefits available to the families of officers killed in the line of duty.
Investigators are still looking into the case. If they determine Victor Decker was acting as a police officer when he was killed, the family is expected to qualify for more than $400,000 in federal and state benefits.
The Virginian-Pilot reports that Virginia Beach investigators have requested files on a shooting in which Decker killed an armed suspected in March 2009. Police haven't said whether there is a connection to Decker's death.
His widow, Dawn Decker, says she checks on the investigation weekly.
